An arthrogram is a diagnostic test that helps us better understand complex structures within a joint. During this test, a solution is injected into the joint that helps your provider see the joint structure. X-rays or ultrasound will be used to help guide the placement of the injection into the joint.

What to Expect

Before the procedure, you'll be given specific instructions, which may include fasting for a few hours depending on the procedure. Wear comfortable clothing and inform your healthcare provider about any allergies or medications you're taking.

You'll be positioned comfortably on an examination table. The area around the joint is cleansed, and a local anesthetic is administered to minimize discomfort during the injection. A contrast dye is then injected into the joint using imaging guidance for precise placement.

After the arthrogram, you might experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with ice and over-the-counter pain relievers. Rest and limited activity are recommended for a brief period following the procedure.
